        I read somewhere that the EDGE data network runs over ordinary cell  
signals, so if you have cell phone functionality, you have data  
connectivity. That also seems consistent with how SLOW it is!

        The 'phone' part of 'iPhone' is just that: a cell phone. You only  
need the data connections for the web stuff and email. But I think  
that they didn't want to get a bunch of pissed off people who bought  
it and then couldn't get their email. They also don't sell it in  
Canada, where there is no carrier who can offer the data features  
such as visual voice mail, but when I was there last month, I had no  
problem making calls (and paying outrageous roaming charges!).
