        Yes, and that was a complaint that was addressed by Steve Jobs. Had  
they gone with the faster system, the available chips that ran it  
were very power-hungry, and would have severely impacted battery  
life. Since last summer, though, several new, lower-power chips have  
been released, and AT&T and Apple have both confirmed that the next  
gen iPhone will be using 3G.

        I tried to explain this to my (techno-illiterate) wife so she would  
understand why I wanted to wait for the second gen iPhone, but when  
my 3-year-old cell phone's battery started dying, she and the boys  
bought me an iPhone as an early Xmas/birthday present back in  
October. Oh well, when the next gen is released, I guess I'll have to  
pick one up, and she can have the hand-me-down.  ;-)
