Mike, I was in the pro Norton camp for a number of years, although I refused to use Norton system doctor on any machine because it slowed it down too much (and it was definitely system doctor). I used the anti-virus and the other System Works tools on a regular basis.
But year after year, starting in 2003, I had more and more problems with Norton and finally gave up on it in 2006. My biggest gripe was the auto updating. For no particular reason, the "catalog" would become corrupt and the software would not download any updates past that. This happened on six different machines. Symantec's "fix" at first was to have me manually uninstall, clear the registry, and then reinstall every Symantec product on the machine. Later, they came out with removal tools to take care of the registry part, but it was still a lengthy process. After being told for the six time on one particular machine that I needed to do this, I switched to Trend Micro and never looked back. My only gripe with Trend is the anti-spam has gotten a bit flaky in what it identifies lately, but outside of that it works flawlessly and is easy on the system. I won't recommend Norton to anyone any more. Jim Dettman Online Computer Services of WNY, Inc. Yes, you are correct that norton does use a lot of system resources, but so does mcafee, or a few of the others. But I have a hard time believeing that it gets worse the longer you have it on to the point that you say. My system is a 2hz amd athlon with 2 gb or ram with over 25 items in my taskbar, outlook 2007 open 24/7, firefox open 24/7 and visual studio 2008 on about 4-6 hours a day and my system hasnt barked at me once. i just reformated my computer this weekend to week because i corrupted my video card drivers, but the system was running beautifully. each year symantec makes norton a bit more resource efficient. ohh, by the way, i have norton save and restore 1.0doing constant backups for all my machines most of the time. just download it and give it the 30 day trial that comes with it to see for yourself.
