That seems contrary to what everyone here has been saying and fighting for
the past 3+ years.  Why is this such a shock?

I agree it is more of a depression but it is no different then having a pet
for a long time.  You see it happening but you like to remember the former
days.  I had to put down both of my dogs last year so I really know this
heartache.
