        OK, then the question becomes: who said that there needed to be  
anyone in that role? The assumption you are making is that the world  
wants such a position and we got it by default; my observations  
indicate that most of the world wants to be left alone without some  
country in the role of deciding what they can and cannot do.

        Orthogonal to the discussion. Doing good deeds does not justify bad  
ones. Growing up in NJ, I knew a lot of communities in which the Mafia  
provided extensive social services, and in return the community  
tolerated and even welcomed them.
