As the former Spanish Translators Coordinator for the UTMag, I can only agree with you 100%.
I never met Michel Fournier, but thanks to his initiative I had the chance to learn a few things from people who knew more than myself about VFP, I also had the chance to write a few articles myself and, what is also important, I got a lot of exposure, especially from the Spanish speaking countries. A lot of Arab speakers and people from India, Africa and even Thailand wrote to me, as a consequence of those articles, and of course, people from Latin American countries did that too. I got lots of business in my own country, because of the above exposure, and even a couple of international contracts. Now my question is: what if Michel needed to get paid for the magazine? He had to incur costs like the designer of the cover, the hosting, and a lot of his time in putting together the Magazine. I never got paid, nor my team of translators. And had to put a lot of time in the translations, especially trying to figure out what the heck some of the writers meant, because their use of the language was not precisely the literary type. We programmers tend to think in terms of bits and bytes, short sentences and a lot of logic and mathematics. Many do not pay much attention to their English (or Spanish or whatever language they speak) As a consequence, translation is not always that straightforward. But I never even dreamed of asking Michel for any payment. I got payment enough from the exposure alone. So, I am one of the people who are very enthusiastic about the UTMag revival, for the above reasons and also because VFP, as I said in one of my articles, is the love of my life in what concerns programming, and anything that would contribute to its survival is received by me with open arms. This was my first step with VFP. Then, I found the various VFP forums - Profox, UT, Foxite, Compuserver, TekTips among others And it has already happened that I posted some questions (5 years ago) in PROFOX and in other resources, and the only place that I got an answer was UT. I`m not complaining of anything, people are not obliged to answer all questions, and from an unknown visitor. But in UT I received lots of help. Many times, the help comes with a link to another previous thread, where I can find some tips or solutions. I found many great articles in UTMAG, that helped me a lot in my VFP life. I visit some forums regularly, UT included. I`m not a UT subscriber, I NEVER paid a penny for any info or help I got from there. And because of this, I`m thankful to UTMAG. I even wrote 5 or 6 articles for it. And I have to disagree with the majority here, because UTMAG has always brought great value. To read UTMAG, you don't need to like Michel Fournier. Luckily, Michel has some great people that offered him lots of help, and that are really helpful, and super engaged with the VFP community. As Mike Yearwood said, they work without any financial profit, and dedicate many hours to help the community. ALthough the essence of UT is a business that looks for profit, the majority of the developers and contributors that make UT are really great, and provide help without looking for other benefits. These people are also an important part of the VFP community.
