I am in total agreement with both of your points. I have often told others that the best way to really learn a subject is to try teaching it to someone else. Thus one of the many benefits in my being a mentor, and in giving presentations on various business and computer related subjects. Clearly that is not the same as teaching a room full of students over the course of several months a subject in depth. But, it still serves to demand that I understand the subject as thoroughly as I can in advance - and the rest I learn on-the-fly and by having to answer questions. > This compels me to keep my UI simple When I develped my two commercial applications one of objectives to make it so dumb-ass simple to use (yet retain its raw power on tap) that it would not require a User Manual. I tell clients and prospects that if I had to create a User Manual it would be a strong indication that I failed in the software's design.
