Michael: I ditched Microsoft Office a couple of years ago for Thunderbird, Lightning and Open Office. I have convinced many to make the move also. Most people that work for large companies are reluctant to make the change. My daughter - who is very good with this stuff and works for a major corp - tried Thunderbird on my recommendation and has made the switch to Thunderbird and Open Office and took a very aggressive approach to making her husband and friends make the move.
My very own wife will not make the change and we have the Lookout vs. Thunderbird, Linux vs. Windohs, Office vs. Open Office argument all the time. I still love her! It is my approach to just use the stuff and show it off whenever I can and make recommendations. If they don't want to make the move, they won't. I also like to point out the positives of Thunderbird when people are having problems. The .pst vs. the Thunderbird file structure should be enough for anyone. Good luck.
