Hmmm - what part of "save a fortune on license fees" don't they understand? Assuming you set them up with IMAP then you can at least do a gradual roll-out of selected folks using Thunderbird. If they don't like it you can always re-install Outlook. I've used Tbird rather extensively for the last 4 years both at my old job and at home. I do prefer Outlook but Tbird is good enough...
