I've learned a lot about localization in the process of creating Dabo,
which is used by people all over the world. We wrap all displayed strings in a
localization function, and Python has tools to extract these. We then load them
up to Launchpad, a service provided by Canonical (the people who bring you
Ubuntu). After that, people who can translate to various languages can
contribute their translations.

So far, we've got a lot of Dabo translated into German and Spanish, but
there is still a lot more to get done.
With these translations, all a developer has to do is:
self.Application.Language = "es"
... and all strings will be displayed in Spanish if a translation is available;
if not, they default to English.
