WASHINGTON – No, maybe he can't. President Barack Obama, who insisted
he would succeed where other presidents had failed to fix the nation's
health care system, now concedes the effort may die in Congress.

The president's newly conflicting signals could frustrate Democratic
lawmakers who are hungry for guidance from the White House as they try
to salvage the effort to extend coverage to millions of uninsured
Americans and hold down spiraling medical costs. Obama's comments
Thursday night came hours after Republican Scott Brown was sworn in to
replace the late Edward M. Kennedy, leaving Democrats without their
filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and Obama's signature health
legislation with no clear path forward.

And he had one of the largest Congressional majorities in history on
his side, to boot.

Maybe experience and character do matter.

"It ought never to be forgotten, that a firm union of this country,
under an efficient government, will probably be an increasing object
of jealousy to more than one nation of Europe; and that enterprises to
subvert it will sometimes originate in the intrigues of foreign
powers, and will seldom fail to be patronized and abetted by some of
them. Its preservation, therefore ought in no case that can be
avoided, to be committed to the guardianship of any but those whose
situation will uniformly beget an immediate interest in the faithful
and vigilant performance of the trust." [Federalist Papers #59]
