Frank,

If it's just the explorer window that hangs, the system has corrupt DLL
files, or a process is causing it to stop responding. Does it hang when you
accessing local data, or just network data? Is it just a particular folder
that causes it to hang? You might have cleaned out the malicious code and
you are left with fragmented garbage. Have you checked the disk for
inconsistencies (i.e. run scandisk)? 

If the entire system freezes and you need to restart the system you may have
a problem with the graphics card drivers.

Are you sure taking your time to recover this machine is cost effective over
buying a new hard drive and starting over?
