Frank, If it's just the explorer window that hangs, the system has corrupt DLL files, or a process is causing it to stop responding. Does it hang when you accessing local data, or just network data? Is it just a particular folder that causes it to hang? You might have cleaned out the malicious code and you are left with fragmented garbage. Have you checked the disk for inconsistencies (i.e. run scandisk)? If the entire system freezes and you need to restart the system you may have a problem with the graphics card drivers. Are you sure taking your time to recover this machine is cost effective over buying a new hard drive and starting over?
