Hi Tracy, the only thing that hangs is the task bar. The clock sticks and I cannot click on any of the icons on it. Once I was unable to click on any of the icons on the desktop too. Otherwise I can continue to work, but I am just concerned about infecting other PCs on my network and when I send files to clients.
There is no real reproducible scenario to make it hang that I can discern. I ran chkdsk and it found no problems. Does scandisk do something different? In terms of cost-effective time, in my panic I had not thought of just buying a new hard drive, but had been looking at new laptops. As this one is four years old I had been thinking it was time for an upgrade. But maybe a new hard drive is really all I need for now, thanks. But then again, I will have to then reinstall all my programs and backups and I may end up with the same problem on the new drive, so I would really like to 1. find out exactly what I am dealing with and 2. know that I have got rid of it once and for all.
