Frank,

It sounds like your problem is deeply rooted in the system and has
administrative access to windows of other applications. 

Or memory issues are beginning to creep up. If you have existing ram you can
test with, now that you know of a reproducible scenario, put it in and run
some tests. 

Still, it might be time to buy the new laptop.
