I would say your experience is typical for the normal (non-techie) user.....
...but very a-typical for the experienced windows user at least from 
what I've seen.

I almost never have issues like that and rarely need to reboot. Most 
windows developers I know are similar in that regards..

Then again, I knew not to run Vista in the first place...and if I 
had, I'd likely had the same issues you did, since most of my friends did too.

On Windows 7 I have an occasional issue here and there, but overall 
it's been pretty solid. XP has been extremely solid for me for the 
last 10 years almost never giving me any trouble at all..

Occasionally I would get some hardware that would just not play nice 
and cause all kinds of weird things to happen ( freeze ups, crashes, 
etc. ), but I would guarantee that it would do the same on any OS as 
it was likely flaky hardware, or buggy drivers, or both.
