Geoff,
All that you stated is your opinion and, while you are entitled to it, at
least in the US you would be entitled to it, that doesn't make it anymore
correct than somebody who takes the opposite position.  I fact, I would
argue that your position is the far weaker of the two.  Far from being
repugnant, the death penalty is just for those that commit heinous crimes
against humanity.  The murder of another being one of those crimes.  And I
am far from one of those individuals that pass judgement on this from afar,
my SiL was murdered and trust me, to this day I hope that the perpetrator is
caught and put to death, as he or she deserves no less.
