Did you also put a line 'sb' into /etc/modules? Perhaps "I've tried adding sb module" means "yes" to my question. If the thing is going to work, then modprobe should tell you. After all, Linux has a reputation of having support generally for "old" cards :-). Here's a hint from my trials: after you reboot after ensuring /etc/modules has your "sb" line, try playing a CD through the CD player (available in Gnome 1.0 menu tree). I couldn't get any Gnome sounds, but the CD player worked, and responded to the volume slider.
