I've never set up laptop with linux, but I'm sure the day will come.
How often would you say that it's necessary to install with an external
monitor running? I think I read that dell and Toshiba didn't have much
problem with a redhat install (but we all know that debian is our first
choice)

What problems are you having?
Generally, you *have* to hook up a vga monitor to get through the
install with the output on external-monitor with your bios settings.
Some laptops just dont have the drivers in linux for video.
