I didn't cover "Automatically detect settings" my guide, but some googling
turns this up:

   http://lists.samba.org/archive/linux/2003-January/006039.html

but I don't see that's relevant given that:

Searching [wget "bad file descriptor"] turned this up:

   http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg04546.html

but that doesn't seem very relevant -- fetching the URL
http://www.google.com/index.html shouldn't result in a filename with invalid
characters. But just to be sure, you could try:

   wget -v http://www.google.com/index.html -O -

or even

   wget --debug -v http://www.google.com/index.html -O -

the -O - just forces wget to write to stdout instead of trying to open any
(potentially invalid) files.
