I hope I'm not teaching grandma how to suck eggs but just thought a description of the relationship between the Package Manager, the System/Base Library and Addons might help. The "Library" referred to above by JVERSION describes all the scripts and other files that reside inside <JinstallDir>\system . It therefore does not include <JinstallDir>\addons, or <JinstallDir>\tools or <JinstallDir>\help. The Library is also referred to as the "base library" in Package Manager, and also sometimes as the "System". Package Manager is a way of distributing "packages" of J code. One package available in Package Manger is "base library" (maintained by JSoftware). Other packages available in Package Manager are addons that have been contributed and are maintained mainly by users (e.g. tara, sqlite, lapack ...). All the packages listed in Package Manager are known collectively as "J Application Library" or JAL. As of J602 the Package Manager is part of the Library installed by the "Installer" referred to above by JVERSION. The version of the Library installed by the Installer is the one that was current when the Installer was released and doesn't get updated until a new Installer is released. So to get an up-to-date installation of J602 you need to install J using the current installer (J602a) and then update to the most recent Library version using the Package Manager. The version of the Libary(system) included in the J601c installer didn't include Package Manager, so to get Package Manager in J601c you first had to manually download and extract a newer version of the Library to <JInstallDir>\system. Once Package Manager is available (as it is on all systems using J602), if improvements or fixes are made to the Library between J installer releases, it is easy to update your system by downloading/installing the "base library" package using Package Manager. No addons are installed by the Installer and updating the "base library" using Package Manager won't update any addons. Addons can be installed using the Package Manager. By checking Package Manager every now & then you can see if you have the latest version of an addon and let Package Manager update you to the new version if desired. Sorry if you understood that all already! Next step, as you know, is to get your proxy settings sorted so Package Manager can contact the JSoftware server hosting the JAL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For information about J forums see http://www.jsoftware.com/forums.htm
