Out of 78 wedding applications at Leeds Register Office over a two-week period, 30 were found to be sham marriages, with couples failing to turn up for their own weddings when they realised immigration officials were waiting for them. The figure came as the Home Office revealed that the number of sham marriages reported last year had doubled from the year before. The fake marriages were discovered by border officials when they mounted an operation looking for bogus bridegrooms seeking to stay in Britain illegally. Officers from the UK Border Agency targeted every couple due to be married in the past fortnight which involved an EU national and a partner from another country. Of the 78 couples booked in to be interviewed by registrars, almost 40 per cent either failed to turn up or abandoned their plans after spotting the immigration team. Four people were later arrested, suspected of being in the country illegally, and seven more face questioning about their right to remain in Britain. The operation took place at Leeds Town Hall and followed a similar exercise in July, when 27 couples cancelled their plans. Sham weddings in Huddersfield, Bradford, Halifax and Wakefield have also been exposed this year. Organised criminal gangs are thought to be behind the racket. They can net hundreds of thousands of pounds from foreigners desperate to live in the UK. A UK Border Agency official said they had spoken to a wide range of people in the past fortnight from all over the world – the Indian sub-continent, Western Africa and Eastern Europe. He said: ‘We want to find the organisers. There are people who are making a lot of money out of this and they are exploiting others to make this money. ‘They are paying EU nationals £100, or giving them mobile phones or clothes to get married. The organisers then charge the non-EU national for their services. The going rate can be anything between £5,000 and £15,000.’ According to Home Office figures, 155 people have been arrested in the UK in the past nine months as a result of investigations into church and civil ceremonies. The Church of England recently announced new measures to tackle sham marriages. Vicars were being trained to spot bogus couples and report them to the immigration authorities. Registrars have a legal obligation to report any suspicions, but this rule does not apply to Church of England weddings. Philip Davies, Tory MP for Shipley, West Yorkshire, said the figures showed the Government underestimated the problem. He said: ‘It is clear from this operation that this is a massive problem – probably even bigger than the Government thought it was – and it has flagged up the extent of the abuse of the system. It probably confirms people’s worst fears that these sham weddings are being used to get people into the country illegally. ‘There is now no excuse for the Government to fail to bring forward some measures to tackle it.’ Home Office figures show registrars reported 934 suspected sham marriages in 2010, compared to 561 the previous year.
