Just to be a tiny bit more complete, under some display conditions and object can appear, and then when you edit or move it, it disappears. This happens when the layer that the object is on is not enable, but the object was made visible because of some operation that highlights primitives on other layers or something like that.
For a mounting hole, make sure that multilayer is enabled. Also make the pad a bit bigger than the hole (you are going to need clearance for the mounting hardware, and that is a one way to do it, the other way is by design rule for mounting holes), though I think it should still show if holes are enabled and the holes are a contrasting color.
