bingo, you got it. The update failure problem was associated with
spaces (possibly other special characters) in the footprint name. I remember
well because I had to take all the spaces out of many footprints when I
first started.

Have you also tried to "Update Footprint from Library"? It didn't work with
spaces in the name.
