Update:

I uninstalled the driver I just installed, and then went registry hacking to
remove other Nvidia stuff (rebooting between each step). I ended up with
plain vanilla VGA and then reinstalled the 29.42 driver. My 3D is much
faster now, but some of the Nview features aren't working right.
