That's odd. I've used that trick on a number of boards with nary a crash that 
I could attribute to it. I've certainly seen my share of other crashes, of 
course, although lots less since I moved from Win95 to Win2K. And I've always 
used it with a width setting so wide that it can't draw any primitives in the 
polygon - that was the whole point. I'd be interested if you find what feature 
of the board makes the difference.
