Hmm, does this happen if gnome-volume-control and gnome-volume-control-
applet are not running?
Could you please upgrade to test7 at least and then please enable debug
logging in PA (set log-level=debug in daemon.conf, don't froget to make
sure PA is restarted). Then you should get a line in syslog each time an
application asks PA to change the volume. Can you find any such line being
printed during your logout?
