what would be considered good settings?
here are mine...

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:
Timing cached reads: 1452 MB in 2.00 seconds = 725.51 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 126 MB in 3.04 seconds = 41.45 MB/sec

how does this compare?

Ok, Installed with RT kernel, booted into single user mode. Jack seems to
be running ok RT. Will test it a little harder later.
Can I confuse postings a little and ask where and how to save the settings
from 'hdparm'? The drive speed increase is huuuuge.
presuming you have hdparm installed... (sudo aptitude install hdparm)

you need to add your settings to the .conf file

sudo nano /etc/hdparm.conf
