Why not Debian testing? Im sure you'll be able to install Debian on eee:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowTo/Install
I'm sure Debian is worth trying.
what version is that download on that site? its not mentioned anywhere...

Lots of usefull stuff in this wiki, I think.
I'm really not much into eee things, so maybe other helping hands will
appear. I'd found old IBM X31 to be more suitable for my purposes than
eee (but let's just not start the flame).
Debian needs little more tweaking than Ubuntu (not "so many many" things
will work out of the box - this comes for a high price in Ubuntu,
however most of your gear will work for sure). Debian is far more
maintainable and trustworthy after you once set it up and running.
Testing branch is quite good compromise between having new stuff and
stable working station. If tou need rock-solid - stable branch (Lenny)
will be better. It's IMHO worth spending this few moments for setup and
learning and have few years of really good fun later.
Tschüss,
Uki
