Okay, here is what I've done:

 - in the "megatests" branch: kept the quick-and-dirty kwargs approach
in place so that I could get megatests running properly in the new
framework quickly and without mixing work on different issues in the
same branch:

Chris, I think this is now ready for pushing to master, unless someone
disagrees of course.


 - in the "cnestedlist_logger" branch: migrated the module from prints
to using logger:

Please let me know what you think, in particular regarding the matter
of choosing the right priority for different messages.
