You might want to check-out Easy Jet's Liverpool to Basel route.
I've
used it several times when taking sailing courses at Plas Menai.

Yes it was Easyjet but they seem to have switched to Geneva at the Swiss
side now. On
http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/reisen.htm?= you can see there are direct (or
one change) trains from Geneva-Airport to Lucern. and "super saver"
tickets.
Only SWISS seem to be serving Basel from Manchester now. You can
check-out times and prices on:
