Any idea what could be the reason?

Could it be that the disk is a DVD- or a DVD+ and the one drive cannot
read that format? Always a pain with DVD s!

Yes, especially with RWs ... I did some tests some years ago and most
DVD-RWs were not readable on other systems, so I gave up on them.
DVD-RAM were and are very reliable, and much more flexible.

You may be right, but for non-rewritables, I thought that this + and - issue should be history ... as all drives were able to read both for many years now.
It must be a VERY old system if it handles only one type of DVD.
