Subject: [Ql-Users] QL Today
So let's move on to another problem that everyone has dodged so far.
Where are the writers going to come from?
One of the reasons QL Today is closing down is that we did not have
sufficient writers to ensure its long term future.
We were fortunately to have some very loyal writers but they were too few
in number. I only had to lose one writer for me to be in serious editorial
difficulties.
The Quanta Magazine is in a less favourable position with only two
permanent writers, the editor and the news editor. If I assassinate Dilwyn
tonight who will fill the next Quanta Magazine?
OK, I've retreated into the "safe room" after this death threat ;-)
It was a subject I was grinding my teeth over, wondering how best to word
such a suggestion (lack of writers, not my death!).
I'd like to be positive and hope that the way QL Forum has developed by
becoming one of the primary exchanges of QL correspondence online - 167
members (about as many as Quanta, I don't remember the Quanta membership
figure from memory). Between that and this list, we are getting used to
online communication. Slowly.
CMS - the Quanta experience was not a good one. We no longer use Tyop3 thank
goodness. Apart from about a year of logging in problems for me which were
never solved, creating pages online were a time consuming nuisance - it was
faster to create them in Word and copy and paste in, believe it or not. I've
used several CMS packages in the past and most have been fair or good or
excellent, though I've never used Joomla. I have noticed though that Joomla
tends to be promoted by "techies" making me wonder what it'd be like for
"users".
Plenty of scope for discussion between now and the end of QL Toady although
it'd be nice to see a firm proposal sooner rather than later.
I suspect it'll be the usual sticking point though - plenty of people
willing to be webmasters and the like, nobody writing content. Would LOVE to
be proved wrong on that count.
Dilwyn
