Could be: On closer inspection just now, the "0" and ")" legends appear to
be marginally bolder, and marginally higher up the key than the others...

Hmm. It says "JM" on each ROM chip. Maybe, as you say, this is a hybrid
unit...
In fact, thinking about it, shift-3 did work the first time (before I broke
the whole damn lot by trying to fix it...), and it produced "#". So maybe
it is UK roms in a foreign model machine?

I vaguely remember something about Sinclair and Samsung coming to a deal
sometime in '85. Did Samsung ever make any machines destined for the UK?
Also, what was the last Dxx- serial prefix? I'm pretty sure one of them has
a D06 with AH ROM, the other may be a D12 or D14 (with JS ROM).
