Actually, I'm quite tempted to do that - well, something similar at any
rate...

It should be possible to de-solder the connectors from the mainboard, chop
the membrane right back to the edge of the keyboard, then solder a ribbon
cable to the mainboard and the connectors, and re-connect just by the kb
backing plate. With no bent bits, the membrane should then just about last
forever (shame Sinclair didn't do something like that...).

However, as my soldering talents are not sufficiently good to rule out
damaging the mainboard, I shall probably purchase a pre-fried machine to
obtain the edge connectors, and solder the ribbon cable directly to the
existing edge connectors.

Or something.... :)

Hmm. Unfortunately, I don't have a working QL here - the nearest one is
250miles away... Good idea though... but, as mentioned, the ROMs have JM
printed on them. Which is odd...

Definitely no foreign or accented letters, and its the standard QWERTY
layout. Just the odd shift symbols.

I agree - auto holiday messages on mailing lists are considered the height
of rudeness (at least one mailing list I used to be on would chuck people
off the list for *one* auto-message, let alone a gamut of them.

Cheers!
