Hi Oliver,

Let me apologise if my comment sounded too rude :-(

It was not my intention at all :-/

Oliver> Copy protection is a legal issue. Not a technical one.

I did not complain about it 'cause you kindly explained everything to my
in our private exchange.

I did not say or ask about 'rendering' but "there is no support to
import free & popular *.osm files", i.e. 'importing' and not 'loading'.

Oliver> If you want to deal with Garmin, *img is the format.

Right, and that's why I complain(ed) not being able to import them in
QlandkarteGT.

Oliver> To split a gmapsupp.img is hacking.

I understand.

Oliver> To split gmapsupp.img supplied by OSM is not really needed.

Really? And how can one import them into the application?

Pls. visit e.g. http://emexes.powweb.com/osm/download.html and dl
e.g. http://emexes.powweb.com/osm/OSM-Austria-2008-08-14.img.zip

Can you load it into Qlandkarte?

Similar thing with free maps at http://www.osm4you.com/ which are
prepared with mkgmap. They come in two flavours: as single gmapsupp.img
and as several *.img files along with *.tdb. I tried to load them and/or
creat myself with mkgmap, but in both cases I get the same result:

"Bad position format. Must be: [N|S] ddd mm.sss [W|E] ddd mm.sss"

Moreover, I found out the following comment at

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User_talk:Nils

which says: " Latest img does not work on garmin colorado

Hello. I've tried downloading Central Europe .img three or four times,
my colleague tried to do that as well but downloaded .img does not work
on Garmin Colorado (previous versions used to work). By "does not work"
I mean Colorado does not recognise the .img file: does not complain but
does not use it. QLandkarte cannot open the .img file too."

So, at the end, there are problems loading OSM prepared maps in
Qlandkarte and those are, according to my present knowledge, one of the
best sources for free maps, i.e. market for Qlandkarte which cannot show
protected maps due to copyright reasons.

I appreciate all the efforts of open-source developers.

Believe me, I'm using Linux 10yrs and things were not always as smooth
as today, even with the most simple thing as writing in one's native
language ;)

Nobody asked for a free lunch - it was just critical remark that new
Qlandkarte is missing some potentially useful feature which was present
in earlier release, let's say it smelled like some 'regression' 'cause
"Blind uncle is better than no uncle." :-)

There is no problem that Croatia is missing in OSM collection (although
it can be surely improved), but that I cannot load those maps in
Qlandkarte as elaborated above.

If you can help me in this regard, I'll greatly appreciate it. ;)

Sincerely,
Gour
