As a quad who can get no exercise, I know what you mean about trying to get your diet right. The only thing you can do is try to find out what diet works best and stick to it as well as you can.
I have lost some weight over the last few weeks, but it's all coming off of my legs. Now I have to be concerned that I will lose weight off my butt -- and that's not good. I disagree about seeing the doctor when you're healthy. I think it's important to get a checkup every year, but remember you are in charge of your health and if a doctor gives you a prescription or tries to give you a prescription you don't think is necessary, you have the right to refuse it. I don't take medicine which I don't deem necessary. Listen to the doctor, do research, and then use your best judgment. It's always better to be armed with information, than to simply make decisions blind. That's my opinion, but then again many others on this list have been living with this condition longer than I have and are doing just fine. You know what they say about opinions!
