Can anyone offer me some advice as to what to tell him or  do?  He just

It probably is the food & using it for 'comfort'. You mentioned he was  
injured in 08. For most, about the first 3 yrs are the most difficult.  Another 
problem could be his  meds. Amitripylines (Elavil) are known for weight  
gain.
