I am lucky enough to go to a hospital which has a large spinal cord unit. Anyway, I had this done about five years ago. It was considered surgery because they did a spinal block in order to prevent the AD. Then they proceeded to use a scope with a laser on it. I was able to watch them blast the stones up and retrieve them on a television set. It was akin to one of the Empire's battle cruisers blasting asteroids in the Empire Strikes Back.
Hopefully he's not planning on opening you up, but you better find out exactly how the procedure will go.
