When I had my accident I was in great shape. I worked out 4 days a week, two of
these were swimming @ 6:30 a.m. As all of us, after 4mos of hospital and rehab
it turned my stomach muscles to flab. When we would enter the hospital there
was a mirror the length of the wall. I noticed my gut and started crying AGAIN.
I think we all did alot of that. Anyway, to my point...I don't think being in
shape at the beginning will help us.

I don't know for sure if this is a FACT------but my spinal and rehab doctors
told me that even if I would loose 100 or more pounds---- Quad belly would not
go away...they said you could be a skinny thin dude but will always have a quad
belly because the muscles that hold back your stomach area no longer work
properly. I guess some are lucky is they keep a tight belly, could also have
some to do with genetics and diet-------I think if you stomach is thin when you
get injured, you can keep a tighter belly much longer. Anyway--lol- good luck
to any working on this, let us all know in time if anything or any program
helps you. Dan H**

Thanks! I've got pretty toned arms. Just need work on tummy. Last few months it
looks like I've put on weight in tummy area. Doesn't make me happy! Haha

I do the same as Mandy, in my bed as well as in my chair. If your chair tilts,
it's easy to find the right angle, you can play with the tilt and see how far
back you can go where you're still able to crunch forward, you can do the same
with a hospital bed, I just do as many as I can, I don't always count them.
Always try to think about sucking in your belly while doing them, even if you
can't it helps just to think about it. I also do some a bit sideways, but don't
do it if you have no trunk control at all unless someone is there to spot you.
These have gotten a lot easier for me with time. I've also been working out my
arms by tilting my chair back and crunching myself up but using my arms, I just
hold on to the arm rests and do like bicep curls, my arms are getting pretty
toned now. I recommend that too!

Try it!

I do- if you have a bed that raises and lowers the head you can sit at an
incline and try to pull yourself up and lower slowly. My PT told me to find an
incline that works where you can do 12-15 and do 2 or 3 sets every 3 days to
strt. If it doesn't cause any negative symptoms to flare up you can either do
more reps, decrease the incline, or do more days per week.

I like to do these with help to keep me in line and focused. It takes a lot of
concentration to hit the correct muscles rather than cheating with my
arms/shoulders and possibly straining something without knowing it.

Best,
