Speaking of which ... how difficult is it to get at those fans? One of mine
makes this very soft but *extremely* annoying rattle and I'm thinking about
putting higher-flow fans in it anyway.

Get a Digi-Key catalog.

The Digi-Key catalog is available online, and you can download the entire
catalog as a PDF file, or just the section you're interested in, also as a
PDF file.

All fans are made to standard dimensions, and within one form factor there
may be as many as six different flow ratings available.

As an example, Apple puts a 42 cubic feet per minute (cfm) fan in its Beige
G3 Desktops. And these machines usually run hot, with the G3's "core" running
at about 92 F, whereas the very same motherboard and CPU in a MiniTower will
run at about 72 F.

Anyway, in this 92mm by 25mm form factor, a 65 cfm fan is available for about
$11 from Digi-Key, and that would be a fifty-five percent improvement in
cooling.

The same strategy can be used in Q950s.

In fact, Q950s are particularly easy as the fan comes out as a separate
assembly, and no disassembly of the P.S. is required.

Peter.
