When using the CD-ROM drive on the external port make sure it is 
properly terminated. I got a similar sounding situation when I first 
tried my hacked together external CD drive on an SE/30 . I whipped 
the case off and set it to terminate and it was fine after that.

The fact that that SAD MAC code translates directly to 'Bus Error' 
may point to the SCSI bus.
