I set the external SCSI CD-Rom ID to 1, then it worked fine. I was also
having trouble booting from the external SCSI CD-Rom when it was connected
to my PPC, and when I set the ID to a lower number than the internal SCSI
HD, suddenly it worked fine. I thought that as long as the IDs didn't
conflict, I was set up fine, but now I guess I learn that you should order
the IDs....I set my internal drive to 6 just to make sure I can usually get
to THAT one first in case I have to sometime disconnect things from the
external chain...
I previously tried finding an internal termination jumper on the external
SCSI CD-Rom, but had no luck with finding one clearly marked as the
termination jumper, and the ones I tried yielded no success. I suppose that
logically, there is also the possibility that something was wrong with the
case-mounted ID selector switch so that it was not IDed correctly when 7 was
selected, or that ID 7 is not usable. Oh, poop, come to think of it, that
may have been the problem! I recall that when I set the internal SCSI HD to
7 on the PC, it wouldn't boot, which is why I moved it to 6. Is SCSI ID 7
reserved or somehow unavailable on the Mac's SCSI bus?
Gosh, I feel like an idiot if that's the case and I wasted everyone's
bandwidth with my sad, dead mac...
