I have suffered a similar symptom when trying to shut my 840av down 
in OS 8.1. It is seemingly the opposite to you problem, it's too 
persistent! When I shut it down with a few Apps running the finder 
closes, then re-opens, then closes, then reopens ad infinitum. I have 
to force reset it in the end.
