My 840av has been to hell and back a few times,. It's had more hard disks than a NAS unit, purely because I got bored and changed them ever few weeks :). I found also that it would lock up solid on the first screen (gray screen with mouse locked in top corner) if I either attached a SCSI drive it didn't like, or attached a SCSI cable backwards, or something similar. Unplug the SCSI ribbon cable (large ribbon at the rear of the Logic Board) completely, take it down to 32MB RAM, and turn it on and see what happens. If mine, Scott's ans Sque's theory is correct it should boot to a grey screen with a floppy in the middle with a flashing '?'. This doesn't look like much but it is progress, TRUST ME :). At that point putting in a System 7.5.3 Disk Tools disk should boot it. If this works as described then you should plug the SCSI ribbon back in at the logic board and unplug the hard disk (which is a pig to do in that tight space) and try starting it again. If THAT doesn't work reattach the hard disk and detach the CD-ROM drive. If that fails it may be a bad cable.
