Sounds like you were able to get the 840 started with the button on the front panel. Can you feel air being pushed out of the power supply fan? Can you hear the hard drive spin up? Yes - possibly the OS is hosed or the disk is damaged. No - HD could be unplugged or dead.
Might want to poke around inside and investigate a little further to see if all cables are connected, etc. The 840 is a great little computer.
