Matthew knows what you mean, we've done it several times, but on his if 
you have to take the sump off you need to pull the joint out slightly as 
the sump (or the spacer plate) goes behind the joint.

I modified a pair of pliers by grinding  flats on the outsides of the 
jaws to make removing the clips easier, insert end of pliers between 
lugs on circlip and then open the pliers while pulling gently on the shaft.
