No, you don't understand :) You don't have to drain the oil at all. Just disconnect the driveshaft itself from the CV joint.
If you disconnect the lower suspension from the hub and pull it away from the engine slightly (not so that you're putting pressure on the gearbox seal), then peel back the rubber seal on the inner joints. If you clear away the grease you should find a little clip that runs around the shaft as it goes into the CV joint. If you open that clip up, you can pull out the shaft and leave the joint in the gearbox. You can do it with a pair of small flat-blade screw drivers, but it's very fiddley lol It's tricky and messy with all that grease, but a lot easier than dealing with gear oil!
