Since I put the instrument panel back, it doesn't come on. I don't
recall whether it did before, and I need to check the diagram. But
usually, the dash light is in the circuit to the regulator between the
battery (via the ignition switch) and the regulator, so that the
alternator starts charging at low revs. Usually, if it's not there,
the alternator won't start until it has enough revs on it - several
thousand on the engine, usually - for the residual magnetism to
generate enough volts in the control circuit to turn it on.
