I'd have a very careful look at the lower suspension on that side, if
you hit it hard enough to damage the joint it may well have bent the
track control arm and/or tie bar.
It could even be the suspension bent inwards pushing the driveshaft
joint in against the rear of the joint that damaged it.
I'd check the shaft for being bent as well.

Thank you for the help guys, I have now managed to find a motor
factor that knew enough about cars to source the cv joint. I will be
making a quick 60 mile round trip to Newbury tomorrow to collect what
we believe to be the right part. So hopefully back on the road tomorrow.

hi
from what ive been told / worked out for myself the 2 types are
interchangeable though I would double check the driveshaft retaining
method first - either 6 cap head screws or a snap ring on the end of
the splined inner cv joint that engages within the diff and try to
match them up
it would appear that the 1.3 - 1.4 had the cap head bolts and the
intermediate shaft support and the 1.1 ohv and 1.6 cvh had the
straight shaft, but as mentioned the shaft support can be unbolted
good luck
