I have checked the suspension setup and had the car running and in gear on axle stands after the knock. Neither the transfer shaft nor the driveshaft showed any signs of being bent. That was my big fear. The cv joint on disassembly shows major scoring on the bearing carrier faces. I suspect it was well on the way to failing anyway, the knock may have just finished the job off. There is a half cm hole through the carrier by one of the bearings, this looks as though it has been caused initially by wear and tear and then punched through by a fairly severe impact. ( The impact I know about.) The collision was a little more severe than I thought. A friend of mine has a taxi with forward looking cctv and was behind me when I hit the island. I had a look at the footage a couple of days ago and the side of the car was a good 2 feet off the ground. I am trying to find a way of recovering the video before it records over and will post it on youtube if I can.
All in all I am amazed that the damage was as light as it was, it was just inconvenient that the broken bit was so bloody awkward to track down. I managed to get the ford part number for the joint, after the partco man identified it, and this was used to cross reference and confirm that I had ordered the correct part. Once again thank you for the help and support offered by the group, I suspect that this would have ended up as an insurance claim without it as I would have given up and chucked it at a mechanic. Instead it has cost about £100 and a day off work. It would have been only £60 but I learned the hard way about chocking the back wheels when the car is on stands. A curious neighbour came across to see what I was up to and leaned on the back of the car, tipping it forward off the axle stands (all 3 of them on the front of the engine frame.) Unfortunately the starter motor is not very good at taking the weight of the car falling on it and it smashed. Lesson learned there. It could even be the suspension bent inwards pushing the driveshaft joint in against the rear of the joint that damaged it. I'd check the shaft for being bent as well.
